Have you been wanting to lose weight, but putting it off as a New Year’s resolution?
I’m here to tell you that that’s not a good idea!
The concept of embarking on a weight loss journey as a New Year’s resolution is common. Many people perceive the calendar change as the perfect opportunity to shed those extra pounds and become a healthier version of themselves. Nevertheless, waiting for the New Year is not the wisest strategy.
In this blog, I’ll show you:
- Five reasons why you shouldn’t defer your weight loss journey until 2024
- Simple steps towards initiating your weight loss journey today
First, though, I want to explain to you why you’re not yet at your ideal weight (and it isn’t your fault):
Chances are, the reason you have not been successful in losing weight previously, or not been successful in maintaining your ideal weight, is because you haven’t found the right long-term strategy. Am I right?
Notice I said ‘long-term’. I strongly believe that our relationship with food and body image is complex. It takes time, reflection and compassion to understand our personal stories around these, before we can develop healthy lifestyle habits that are customised to us.
Our worlds today are filled with unprecedented stresses, social media pressure etc. Add in the fad diets and quick fixes that are sold to us but fail to address the root cause of our weight loss issues, and the result is eating disorders and yo-yo dieting that leave us emotionally and physiologically exhausted.
We are also sold the concept that the magical date of January 1st will be the catalyst to transform our lives for the rest of the year. We probably all know this isn’t the case…
So here are five reasons why you shouldn’t defer your weight loss journey until the New Year:
1. Procrastination and the All-or-Nothing Dilemma
The ‘New Year, New Me’ mindset often leads to procrastination, where we delay taking action until the next year, but that ‘next year’ never actually arrives. I’ve been there too, and I understand how this procrastination can lead to cycles of procrastination that can be anxiety-inducing and hinder our ability to make positive changes. It creates an all-or-nothing dilemma where unrealistic resolutions can lead to disappointment and abandonment of weight loss efforts.
Shifting away from the New Year’s resolution mindset allows for the setting of more realistic goals and implementing sustainable changes at any time.
This approach will put you on track for meeting your targets, even before the new year begins!
2. Overcoming the Winter Blues and Financial Drain
The period following the holidays often takes an emotional toll. Winter’s shorter days and colder weather can trigger seasonal affective disorder (SAD) for some, while the festive season tends to strain our finances. It’s all too easy to blame your wallet for not taking that crucial first step towards a healthier you.
Starting your weight loss journey earlier can be your weapon against the winter blues, lifting your spirits and bolstering your motivation to invest in yourself ].
It also obliterates the money excuse, and can give you the impetus to plan prudently so that you can navigate the holiday season without requiring a financial bailout come January.
3. Overindulgence During the Festive Season
One of the pitfalls of waiting for the New Year to commence your weight journey is the festive season preceding it. From Halloween through to Christmas and New Year’s Eve, there are so many opportunities for overindulgence. This is then accompanied by a chorus of self-critical thoughts, such as “You’ve overindulged again” or “Why can’t you stop at one slice?” These negative inner voices can be disheartening, eroding self-efficacy, self-esteem, and self-worth, ultimately reducing motivation and the likelihood of a successful New Year’s resolution. Navigating the holiday season in this state becomes even more challenging.
By kicking off your weight loss journey before the festive season, you’ll find it easier to make healthier choices during these celebrations without feeling like you’re missing out.
Imagine ending 2023 on a positive note, full of self-assuredness and heading into 2024 with the momentum you need to succeed. It’ll be like giving yourself the best holiday gift ever!
4. The New Year Gym Rush
Let’s talk about the gym. I’m not sure about you, but before embarking on my journey to a healthier weight, the idea of dragging myself to the gym to shed those stubborn pounds around my waistline felt like a monumental task. Even the thought of squeezing into my oversized, brand-new gym attire was daunting. And stepping into the gym during those early weeks of January? Well, it was a chaotic and, let’s be honest, overwhelming experience.
During this time, the flood of people rushing in to kick-start their New Year’s resolutions leads to crowded fitness centres and a scarcity of available equipment.
Here’s the truth: physical activity goes far beyond the confines of a thrice-weekly gym visit. It’s high time we dispelled the misconception that regular gym sessions alone guarantee weight loss. In reality, it’s about reducing sedentary behaviour in your daily life.
By starting your health journey earlier, you’re not just avoiding the New Year’s gym rush; you’re also nurturing self-confidence and self-awareness. This early start allows you to discover activities that truly resonate with you, shifting your mindset from mere “exercise” to embracing “movement” as a pleasurable and integral part of your daily routine.

5. Mastering the Art of Preparation and Consistency
When embarking on a weight loss journey, it’s crucial to understand that it’s not just about shedding pounds; it’s a transformative path toward a healthier way of life. This journey necessitates making lasting adjustments to your dietary and lifestyle practices, often requiring the development or enhancement of problem-solving, time management, and organizational skills.
It goes without saying then, that successful weight loss is inherently tied to effective planning and preparation. It goes beyond the practical aspects of devising your strategy, encompassing setting achievable goals, gathering essential information, and creating an environment that fosters long-lasting change. Preparation extends to cultivating the right mindset, one imbued with assertiveness and self-care.
Moreover, consistency plays a pivotal role. Research indicates that establishing a new habit takes an average of 66 days. Waiting for New Year’s to approach means delaying your progress and missing the chance to cultivate healthy habits. The longer you wait, the more challenging it can be to initiate, and your consistency may waver as a result.
Commencing your weight loss journey before the New Year offers a strategic advantage, focusing on one key point: Preparation and Consistency as the Cornerstones of Success. By starting early, you gain the opportunity to progressively integrate the practical and mental aspects of lifestyle changes into your daily routine, rendering them more sustainable and enjoyable.
Picture this: you can gracefully sidestep Aunt Agatha’s insistent extra helpings and the temptation to surrender to a never-ending feast just to appease her. Having practised the art of assertiveness pre-Christmas, you’ve developed the confidence to politely say, “No, thank you. I’m not on a diet; I’m on a journey to take better care of myself.” This dual preparation, encompassing both practical and mindset-oriented aspects, empowers you on your journey toward a healthier, happier you.
